Yellow Stingray (Urobatis jamaicensis)
(Cuvier, 1816)

Synonyms: Raia jamaicensis, Trygonobatus torpedinus, Urobatis sloani vermiculatus, Urolophus jamaicensis

Urobatis jamaicensis occurs in shallow tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Guyana, e.g., in the Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico and throughout the Caribbean; occasionally found as far north as Cape Lookout, North Carolina. It inhabits inshore waters over rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms, coral reefs and mangroves; at depths 0-70 m. These are small stingrays with round bodies and short tails with a well-developed caudal fin and one serrated spine. Disc width does not exceed 35 cm and total length 70 cm. Dorsal pattern is highly variable and consists of minute reticulations forming spots and blotches on a light or dark background; capable of changing the tone and contrast of its coloration to blend with the surroundings. Yellow Stingray feeds on marine invertebrates (shrimp, worms and mollusks) and small fishes. Ovoviviparous.
